Lindie Schonken, in-house interior designer at our Somerset West showroom, recently joined up with her long-time client, Izana Crous, to give her home interior a sprucing up, following some renovations to her home. Lindie gave us a room-by-room walk-through of their creative collaboration.
Izana already had some beautiful furniture pieces that she wished to keep. The challenge was to incorporate new elements that would result in a beautiful and interesting mixture of the old and the new. We decided to add a Square Arms couch, upholstered in a rich Bovine Ginger leather to add some warmth to the room. Moving on to some occasional chairs, our Clarens chairs served as a great addition to the space. The Clarens’ blackwood frames compliment the wooden items that Izana wanted to keep.
We also decided on a contrasting leather colour, Bovine Pepper, to balance out the room’s colour palette. We used a selection of scatters to incorporate splashes of pattern and texture; the dash of yellow worked especially well.
The living room is adjacent the braai area and by incorporating a blackwood Sahara coffee table, with its prominent steel legs, we managed to tie these two areas together. Incorporating a black and white Hertex rug blended well with the coffee table as well as Izana’s black picture wall feature. We agreed on a blackwood Linear plasma unit for this space. It’s minimalist design, clean lines and overall understated look helped blend all the elements together.
We both agreed that the Griekwa table would work perfectly here, especially since it slotted in effortlessly with all the existing pieces. It also lent a warm and inviting farmhouse feeling to the space.
Since they would be spending a lot of time here, Izana wanted sturdy yet comfortable dining chairs. The Jozi dining chairs were an easy choice. Opting for blackwood frames and Bovine Pepper leather upholstery, same as the Clarens chairs in the living room, we created another element that would tie these two spaces together. Adding plenty of plants not only livened up the space, but also brought in a welcome splash of green.
The entrance hall is very narrow, so we were challenged to bring in something simple that wouldn’t clutter the space. The light and simplistic Tankwa server was an ideal filler. It’s from Incanda’s veneer range and for the oak finish we agreed on the Pale Wheat to compliment the painting just above it.
The stunning Hertex runner not only creates a focal point, but also draws attention to the server setting.
The main bedroom isn’t overly spacious, so we had to keep that in mind when choosing the furniture. Our Prins Albert ottoman is such a statement piece and just looked stunning at the foot of the bed. The deep-buttoned finish lends a luxurious element to the room.
To tie in with the steel legs of the ottoman, we added the Sahara bedside tables. Besides carrying through the steel element, it also gives the space a rustic look and feel. As with the rest of the house, we opted for blackwood pieces here as well.
We kept the headboard simple and understated to not overcrowd the room and placed a mirror just above it to create a lovely focal point. The vibrant green toned scatters and throw helped to add some life and texture.
Together we managed to breathe new life into Izana’s home and introduced timeless pieces that could one day serve as the foundation for another revamp.
