By Ockerlene Endemann
Ockerlene Endemann is the Head of Furniture Design here at Incanda and has been a part of our creative team for the past 7 years.
She recently set aside some time from her hectic schedule to give us a ‘behind the curtain’ look at what really goes into designing furniture.
Q: How would you describe the current design style of Incanda?
A: Incanda’s style have grown and developed to cover a wider selection of styles over the last few years and have recently focussed on a more simplistic and lighter style with clean lines and softer edges. We’ve been moving away from big bulky designs towards a more relaxed and comfortably style.
Q: What sets the Danabaai bedroom collection apart from other similar designs?
A: For the new Danabaai bedroom range we have kept to what we do best and that is our beautiful solid wood crafted items. The new Danabaai headboard and base offers 3 different styles in the same design. You can choose between a solid wood headboard or an upholstered option in either leather or fabric and really find the option that works with your style and interior.
The bedside table will fit into any space and adds that final touch to completing your bedroom with a practical open cube bedside providing a little extra storage space and preventing your room from becoming too cluttered.
Q: How long does it take on average from start to finish to develop a new product?
A: It varies quite a bit depending on what we are working on. Every new item starts with a story board or theme that we like, and feel will add to our selection and overall range. Once the concept is approved, we move on to concept drawings, tweaking detail and dimensions until we have a working drawing that we feel is ready for prototyping. It’s always very exciting to see the first prototype build of a concept that has only lived on paper till now.
We go through a few rounds of building and refining the design to the final design that ends up in our range. Sometimes an item only makes it to the prototype stage and never see our final product range.
When a new product is launched it’s almost like watching your baby on the first day of school. You hope everybody will love it as much as you do!
Q: Can we expect any new designs from Incanda this year?
A: Yes, we have quite a few new items planned for this year. There is a beautiful new solid wood patio range planned for our Spring/ Summer 2021 season as well as a few new lounge and dining room items coming out. We are spending a lot more time at home and the need for our personal spaces to be a comfortable, practical, relaxed and inviting space is more important than ever. We are adding items to our range to address that specific need. From that functional, work from home office space to the perfect outdoor entertainment area, we will be adding something to make your home perfect.

The synergy between the minimalist design and the richness of wood is what makes our new Danabaai Bed classic yet contemporary. Adding to its versatility is the fact that it can be made from either oak or blackwood and there is also the option to choose between a wooden or fabric upholstered headboard.
These small customization options give you the freedom to play around with the basics of the bed itself, but also with how you accessorise it. It will complement almost any interior style.
You can opt for a fabric upholstered headboard in a soft, neutral colour or take a more adventurous approach by choosing a brightly coloured or patterned fabric.
Our Danabaai Bed, with its crisp lines and smooth finishes, is an example of Incanda’s commitment to keep producing quality, handcrafted furniture that will stand the test of time, but to also be at the forefront of furniture design and the latest trends.
Designed specifically to compliment this latest addition to our bedroom range, the Danabaai bedroom cube mirrors the beds clean lines and smooth finishes and offers ample surface and storage space.
Put together, it’s simply perfection.
• The Photoshoot •
To capture the true beauty of our Danabaai bedroom set, we braved the rough Van Der Stel Pass near Botrivier to shoot at the stunning KolKol Mountain Lodge.
Kol Kol Mountain Lodge started as a gutsy idea and now boasts nine cabins, as well as three Fynbos pods!
We had the privilege to set up in one of these stunning pods that were specifically designed and built to blend in with the beautiful surroundings.
A heartfelt thank you to the owners of Kolkol, Karen and Rudi Oosthuyse, for allowing us to use their location for our shoot. This was one experience we will never forget!
– A sanctuary of calmness in the mountains –
They say a picture speaks a thousand words, and, as with most of the shots our team managed to capture while on location at Kolkol, this one truly portrays a feeling of calmness and being one with nature!
A bedroom is so much more than where you sleep – it’s where you begin and end your day; where you relax, unwind, and clear your mind!
While the idea of having a bedroom in nature is not exactly realistic, nothing prevents you from bringing some nature into your bedroom.
Incorporate a couple of potted plants, a lovely fern perhaps, and feel how it lifts your spirit and calms your soul. It also helps to purify the air!
Here’s a few more beautiful location shots that might just serve as the inspiration you need to create your own personal sanctuary at home.
